WARDOGS gameplay: how every match works

WARDOGS gameplay in one screen: up to 100 players split across three factions — Lonestar (blue), Valkyra (red) and Manticore (green) — fight over a randomized 2x2 km Control Zone on a 256 km² map. The team with the most players inside the zone earns points, and the first team to 100 points wins the match. Inside the Control Zone sits a smaller, shifting Hot Zone: players standing in it count double toward their team's count, and it pays double cash. Every player starts with $10,000 of in-game cash, buys a fresh loadout every life, and keeps leftover cash from match to match. Kills score no points; revives, transport and spotting pay cash. There is no class menu — your role is whatever you buy. Below is how a match plays out, what a new player should do first, and what Season 02 changed. Every claim here is traceable to official BULKHEAD announcements — see Sources at the bottom, and the WARDOGS game overview for the basics.

Scoring: the Control Zone decides, not kills

The mode is inspired by King of the Hill, and points come from exactly one thing: having more players inside the Control Zone than the other teams. Kills earn cash but score no points, so a squad that only hunts kills can lose to a squad that simply stands in the zone. When you are in the zone, chase the shifting Hot Zone when you can: players in it count double toward their team's player count and it pays double cash. The Control Zone is randomized each match, and per the official site no match ever plays out the same.

Cash: you spend it every life, and you keep it between matches

Every player starts with $10,000. Each life, you purchase a custom loadout — weapons, gear, utility and vehicles — and whatever you earn on top persists from match to match. Earning is built around teamplay: revives, transporting friendlies to the zone, kills and spotting all pay cash, and players tip each other for rides and revives.

Bases pay too. You can build your own forward operating base (FOB) at a strategic chokepoint and keep it supplied with pallets, and hacking or destroying an enemy FOB also pays cash and XP.

Cash profits can be exchanged for Gold Bars, which buy cosmetics in the Gold Market. There is no battle pass and no pay-to-win, and BULKHEAD has stated that in-game cash and gold bars will never be sold — the optional Supporter Edition is the only paid extra (what it includes and what it costs).

Three factions, no fixed classes

You play in one of three factions:

FactionColorWho they are
LonestarBlue“Heavy-hitters in the Western paramilitary world” (official TOP QUESTIONS post)
ValkyraRedRestorationists of the Soviet People's Republic
ManticoreGreenThe Kingdom of Persia's shadow army, out of Tehran

There is no class to pick from a menu. Roles are player-defined: you build a role by what you buy, and you earn XP on role tracks — the patch notes name Career, Medic, Support, Recon, Driver and Pilot tracks. In practice: buy a vehicle and you are your squad's driver, ferrying players to the zone for cash and tips; buy medical gear and you earn as the medic reviving them.

Your first ten minutes

  1. Pick your server on the DEPLOY screen. Update 0.1.2 (September 30, 2026) added this flow: hit DEPLOY and choose between Official, Community, Infantry Mode and Low-Level servers, and BULKHEAD said its purpose was to better highlight the Infantry Mode and Low-Level community servers. Fan guides recommend Low-Level community servers for new players.
  2. Get into the Control Zone and stay in it. Kills score no points — only having more players in the zone does — and the Hot Zone inside it counts double and pays double cash. Buy a loadout you will actually carry into the zone and hold ground there: that is both the win condition and the paycheck.
  3. Make your first cash by keeping teammates alive and moving. Revives pay cash, transporting friendlies to the zone pays cash, and players tip each other for both — so even before you can out-shoot veterans, support play pays for your next loadout.
  4. Treat $10,000 as a working budget, not savings. You rebuy your loadout every life, so spend on what helps the team hold the zone — transport, supplies for your FOB, a kit you can afford to redeploy on — and earn it back through revives, transport and tips.
  5. Never touch cash or XP exploits, and never buy cash for real money. Per the Update 0.1.2 policy, abusing exploits or real-money trading resets your cash and progression and risks a permanent ban. The fast-money glitches players post about are exactly how accounts get reset.
